He summarises the brand’s challenger strategy perfectly and explains why a bold and irreverent water company is proving such a popular concept in 2021. I’ll leave the final word to Steve Nilsen, Liquid Death’s Vice President of Lifestyle Marketing, who we interviewed for The Challenger Project last year. Liquid Death’s Mountain Water and Sparkling Water are currently sold in Walmart, Whole Foods and 7-Eleven stores nationally, a retail offer that complements its popular D2C business via its website. The fresh funds are to help expand the company’s footprint in the US. In September 2020, the company raised a further $23m in Series B funding taking its total investment to over $34m. The company share the shocking and depressing statistic on its site that “if plastic production isn’t curbed, plastic pollution will outweigh fish pound for pound by 2050.” Death to plastic, indeed. Liquid Death’s water comes in infinitely recyclable aluminium cans, rather than the category convention of plastic bottles. Whilst clearly an irreverent brand, it’s deadly serious about one thing: killing plastic. ![]() And another reason for curious consumers to visit its site and engage with the brand. It’s an interactive baby name generator that provides custom baby names such as ‘Zorglom the Destroyer’ or ‘Hellface Meathammer’. ‘Killer Baby Namer’ is another memorable activation on its website. Liquid’s turning sour lemons into sweet lemonade. Hits include ‘I thought this was alcohol’ and ‘Your product is dumb’. The irreverent challenger has since followed up by releasing a 14-track album on Spotify and 12-inch vinyl called ‘Greatest Hates’ made up of comments and product reviews the company has received online. Water is liquid death.” In the following three months after the ad’s launch, the company had amassed more Facebook followers than Pepsi-owned Aquafina. “Water is not a girly drink for yoga mums” the ad says. Liquid Death’s debut ad, which features a man being waterboarded for the spot’s duration (it’s way funnier than it sounds), cost $1.5k to make and within three months had 3m views. But it’s hard to argue that in mostly uninteresting categories such as packaged water, deliberately flipping a 180 on category conventions can offer results. ![]() For many marketers, the approach the brand has taken may seem a little too literal and pronounced. Liquid Death is typical of a challenger brand in both its mindset and behaviours. ![]() And if the dominant emotion in the industry is about tranquillity, health and being serious, the brand instead makes water sound exciting, dangerous, and pretty weird. Where the water category’s conventional colours are white and sky blue, Liquid Death choose black as its primary brand colour. Where consumers might usually see mountains and the alps, we hear of Earth’s underworld. In a category that is so often about life and vitality, Liquid Death instead talks about demons, death, murdering (thirst) and killing (plastic). Liquid Death, the mountain water brand, appear to agree as it’s taken a similarly direct and contrarian approach to entering the bottled water category. It’s a sure-fire and straightforward way to bring differentiation to a brand and interest to a category. We have a brand exercise we use at eatbigfish called ‘Flip.’ We ask the client to identify the conventions, practices and typical behaviours of the category and then deliberately flip them to see what that might look like for their brand. ![]() In an interesting diversion for the narrative adventure genre, there's no morality system in Resurgence. You'll only have a short window to choose a response for any decision, which both keeps dialogue breezy and prevents players ruminating too much on the potential outcomes. Key decisions will impact how others view you – if Carter is too flippant with his overly logical Vulcan department head, for instance, it'll be remembered and influence later conversations. ![]() Across the game, you'll uncover a host of personal and professional problems, for the leads as well as their crewmates. It's not just switching between issuing commands as Jara and fixing warp coils as Carter though – decisions made by one can impact the other, even when not directly interacting. You alternate control between the two leads, giving a greater insight into the operations of the Resolute. With foresight, the disagreement and its potentially fractious outcomes may feel slightly poignant, given what we know happens to dilithium by the time of Discovery season three, but it's a strong starting point before affairs spiral out into conspiracy and deeper interplanetary politics. The core mission is a diplomatic one, engaging in peace talks between the Alydians and the Hotari, two races at odds over access to a dilithium mine. Both are aboard the USS Resolute, a recently repaired science vessel under the command of Captain Solano, with Jara struggling to win over her new crewmates, and Diaz juggling an understaffed engineering department and perhaps a few too many problems to solve before the ship is space-ready again.įor Trek fans, it's all immediately recognisable territory, with a crew of likeable if disparate personalities to get to know, and relationships to form with them as both playable characters. Set after Star Trek: Nemesis, Resurgence puts you in the shoes of First Officer Jara Rydek, a Starfleet Academy ace who graduated top of her class, and Carter Diaz, an engineering whiz. Thankfully, there's no wait between chapters though, as this is a complete branching tale delivered in one go. Warp to 2023 though, and developer Dramatic Labs – formed by former Telltale CEO Kevin Bruner and with plenty of staff moving over with him – is correcting that mistake with Resurgence. It's strange to realise that Star Trek, a franchise that arguably works best on television where an episodic format allows for greater exploration of characters, themes, and philosophies, never got the Telltale Games treatment during the heyday of episodic, narrative driven gaming. The oil, mixed with dust, creates a paste which can block the pistons. This will help remove the oily layer from the rotor.ģ) Caliper cleaning: the oil has also dirtied the brake caliper. Use a slightly rough but strong cotton cloth while cleaning. If we have one, a good cleaning with a degreasing detergent and power sprayer doesn’t hurt it helps remove oil from the cooling vents. To clean the rotor, we use isopropyl alcohol, a chemical intended for cleaning rotors or, as an alternative, ethyl alcohol. Therefore, it’s important to clean them attentively. ![]() In addition, oil tends to remain trapped in the rotor’s cooling vents, with the risk that it will contaminate the pads after cleaning. This layer of burnt oil and dirt must be removed. Just the same, the heat and the dirt can form a blackish layer on the braking surface. Unlike the brake pads, the metal rotor doesn’t absorb oil. For “The One” system, the pads are removed by unscrewing the cotter pin and pulling the pads towards the rear of the caliper.Ģ) Cleaning the rotor: after removing the wheel we can clean the rotor. To remove the pads, each model has its own procedure. This is an utter disaster!ġ) Removing the wheel and extracting the pads: we begin by removing the wheel and the pads from the brake caliper. Brake caliper, adapter bracket and rotor are all covered and the oil has caused dust, which in this season abounds on the trails, to adhere to the surface. The loss of oil was significant and has contaminated the lower left area of the fork. However, as in our case, since the pads are new or still in good condition, throwing them away would be a shame it would be worth trying to clean them. If the pads are almost completely worn, it’s better to replace them. The first thing to do is evaluate whether it’s worth intervening. So, it is difficult to ride in this condition… The oil, contaminating the pads, has made the front brake inefficient even when squeezing the brake lever tightly, the wheel continues to turn. This is not an insignificant contamination suspension oil is extremely difficult to remove. The result is a front brake that doesn’t work as it should. The problemĭue to a worn washer at the base of the outer leg, the fork’s oil has escaped, inexorably soaking the rotor and the brake caliper. Today, we’ll see some tricks of the trade to restore the use of contaminated pads. It’s impossible to use the bicycle in these conditions so something must be done. When this happens, the pads absorb the lubricant with disastrous results instead of braking, the pads slide on the rotor, causing inefficient braking.
